Chapter Four

Hannah screamed as the silver dragon soared higher and then dove, spinning with her in his claws. Her stomach heaved, and she had to close her mouth to keep from vomiting.

Is he going to kill me? Eat me? Or just drop me for fun?

A second later, they landed roughly, the jolt jerking her entire body. Her head was still spinning when he shifted, and suddenly a silver-shifter held her in his arms.

She opened her mouth to scream for her dragons, but he clamped a hand over her mouth and backed up with her. Eyes wide, she stumbled back with him, looking frantically around the rooftop he’d landed on. He took them under the shade of an air duct and sat, pulling her down into his lap.

“Don’t speak,” he whispered gruffly into her ear. “Or you will call your dragons, and they will be forced to fight me. And everybody knows, two green dragons can’t hope to defeat a silver dragon.”

She shivered, feeling the evidence of his arousal behind her.

“I’m going to remove my hand. If you try to shout, their deaths will be on your hands.” Very slowly, he uncovered her mouth.

Breathing hard, her thoughts frantic, she tried to stall him. “Why did you take me?”

“You called to me. I saw you, and I knew we could work together. Yes, you might be meant for Greens. Maybe even the two who had you, but I could make you into a mate fitting of a silver dragon.”

“No,” she shook her head, realizing the truth even before she spoke it. “I remember them. They’re my dragons. I don’t want anyone else.”

He growled behind her. “You only want them, because you’ve never had me.”

Anger slowly uncurled within her, replacing some of her terror. “I. Don’t. Want. You. I want to go back to my dragons.”

He was quiet for a long moment. “Too late. I have chosen you.”

Above her head, she suddenly saw two green dragons circling the sky. They roared, flames exploding from their lips. Jade. Emerald. I’m so sorry. I should have listened to you. I should have accepted—

Hannah! Jade’s voice came into her mind as if from far away.

She stiffened. Could they really hear her from this distance? She’d never considered how their mental communication worked.

Where are you? Emerald asked, his voice filled with desperation.

She wanted to tell them so desperately that it hurt, but she couldn’t live with herself if something happened to them. I can’t tell you. He’ll hurt you.

“Silver dragons prefer to take their mates in public,” the dragon behind her growled. “But I will seal you to me. I will not risk losing you as my mate.” He started to pull at her dress as a chill crept down her spine.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”

Her head jerked up, and her gaze locked onto another silver dragon, naked and leaning against the rooftop door in a casual manner.

“Ember, this is not your concern!” The dragon that held her shouted.

The other dragon smirked. “Can’t you sense it? Or don’t you care? She is their one-and-only.
